Using AI in research without losing the human review
Start small. Make the checks explicit. Keep responsibility clear.
When a research task takes too long, it is tempting to start with a tool. A better starting point is the work itself: what part is repetitive, what part requires interpretation, and what would happen if the output were wrong?
That distinction helps turn a broad ambition to “use AI” into a decision a team can actually evaluate.
Begin with one bounded task
Consider an early draft of a document summary. Write down what the summary should capture, which source material it can use, and what it must leave out. Keep the first trial small enough that a reviewer can compare every important statement with the original.
This gives the team something concrete to discuss. Does the draft preserve the meaning? Does it miss a qualification? Does it make a tentative finding sound certain?
Decide how you will check the result
A fluent answer is not, by itself, a useful answer. Before running the task, create a short review checklist: factual accuracy, completeness, source traceability, and clarity about uncertainty. Include a place to record corrections.
For a numerical claim, the reviewer should be able to locate the supporting table or calculation. For an interpretation, the reviewer should be able to explain the reasoning. If neither is possible, the draft is not ready to use.
Count the review time
Compare the full workflow with the current process. Include preparation, checking, corrections, and documentation. A draft produced quickly may still take substantial work to verify. The useful question is whether the complete process helps the team deliver sound work.
Keep responsibility clear
Name the person responsible for reviewing the output and deciding whether it can be used. Agree on which information is appropriate for the tool before providing source material. Record where AI assistance was used so that another team member can understand the workflow.
Let the trial change your plan
A small trial may reveal that a task is a good candidate for assistance. It may also show that a simpler template or clearer instructions would solve the problem. Both are useful findings.
The aim is a process that helps people think and work carefully. Start with one task, make the checks explicit, and let the results guide the next step.
